April certainly gives the impression that she is well informed and experienced in self publishing. Her information was
    good.

Where do we go to get the info on the sources she mentioned eg. prof editing? i did not get that and one or two others…

    Learnings–Don’t go it alone.
Build up a network of people to cheer for you in your writing journey
Do polls like voting on book covers, blurbs, and illustrations as you are writing your book. Keep people engaged.

Most important–have an email list of people that can build and nurture you on your writing and marketing journey.

I really enjoy listening to April on her podcast. I always learn when she is interviewing others. She is very trusted in our writing community. Her freebie said Book a call but I’m not sure what it would be for??? To get help, to buy a course?

Wonderful information. I’m especially interested in finding a mentor and support group.
My local library has a writer’s group, but no one is writing children’s books, so I’d like to find others who write for children.

Reedsy offers a lot of help with all things writing. I absolutely support April’s support of them.

I agree, too, that Reedsy offers lots of great writing insights. Great! 🙂

This was an interesting seminar. I will definitely use her advice from her top tip by studying and learning as much as I can about the marketing and what will fit for me.

I agree that there are pros and cons on both sides (i.e. traditional and self-publishing). My understanding is that with self-publishing, the writer has more creative control related to different aspects of the book project, while the publishing houses may have more experience with topics with more commercial potential, covers that are more appealing to the public, and many other aspects. However, nothing and nobody can predict the success or the failure of a writing project only based on the criteria that it was traditional or self-published.

Still, I do see a great difference between the two from the point of view of the writer. I think it’s with the self-publishing choice that one can measure a writer’s commitment to this craft because it involves many aspects that the writer needs to learn, including marketing, eventual pitfalls, scammers, etc. – many, many aspects that are all a consistent time and energy engagement.

Thank you, April. My greatest takeaway is your suggestion to write a sample scene to send to prospective illustrators in order to evaluate their work. Illustrators’ fees for creating one scene are reasonable, so as an indie author, I can see the art work for and “interview” more than one illustrator.

I did try to book a call and failed. I got to the last step: [continue]

Please try again! I tried today (July 21st) and it worked. After you press ‘continue’ there is one more step that’s the confirmation of your appointment and a link. A Zoom link comes by email, too.

Thanks April for the information regarding the pros and cons of self publishing. Also, thanks for the advice about starting to gather a list of people with various expertise that will be needed in publishing your book.

Your teaching here was clear and superbly put together. I am going to listen to it over again as I bought “Premium” after hearing your talk. I love writing and I need to put more into the marketing side of it all. For me this has been the best information, so well delivered, that I have ever heard. I needed to be reminded about all you said to us. I go to book and craft shows and local markets; but, at 86, I am tired and need to move online far more. Many thanks, April
